My comments on the Anti-Walmart legislation up this week:
1. I don't like walmart.. I don't like what it's done to the country, and to the many towns and cities it has moved into.
2. In fact, I don't like consumerism in general. Buy less.. eat out more, that's my motto.
3. The legislation says three things:
--Ban stores bigger than 120,000sq.ft. selling stuff like groceries.
--Ban stores bigger than 120,000 sq.ft. from anywhere in the city except downtown, and make them get a conditional permit.
--require all stores bigger than 50,000sq.ft. to get a conditional use permit
--gives the planning department all sorts of things to consider before granting a permit to a 50,00sq ft store
I would suggest that the legislation simply be the 'require a conditional use permit' and leave the planning to planning, and leave the future decisions to the future public.
(of course, I also feel that the planning commission and dept. need a lot of over-hauling)
