SPUR's newest report--

Once again, I'm really impressed with the stuff coming out of SPUR. They just published another smart look at the housing situation, about housing above retail.....
which just happened to be something I was ranting about around a month ago. They consentrate their discussion on the 'big box' retail places..well, the bigger than the little corner stores, anyway. Imagine if the Castro Safeway had been built like NoPa's Petrini Place (at Masonic and Fulton) with housing above it, parking underground, and a park instead of a parking lot. That's really what SPUR is going for.

About a month ago, I started pointing out to people how in D5 we have all these one story small retail places, sometimes wedged between two 4 or 5 story residential buildings. That meat market on Divis between Grove and Fulton comes to mind.. but also the corner store at Ashbury and Hayes... just to think of two right around my house. Imagine if there was a way to get those building owners to work with housing people and put 4 or 6 1/2 bedrooms on top of those stores. Another great way to do infill housing.
